I am taking Metformin and I have heard that it depletes my B12 levels. Is this true? Linda F.

Yes, Metformin use has been associated with vitamin B12 deficiency. In one study, the presence of B12 deficiency in people taking Metformin was 28%. The higher the dose of Metformin, the higher the likelihood of developing B12 deficiency. B12  deficiency can lead to B12 deficiency anemia and can be associated with symptoms of nerve damage and cognitive effects. Anyone taking Metformin should be checked for B12 deficiency with their doctor.
